Downtown Kingston! | Chef Cooking Demos

Chef Cooking Demos

Running every Saturday in July and August, there will be free chef cooking demos at the Kingston Public Market. The demos will happen in the courtyard of Springer Market Square from 11am until noon.

Cooking demos began a few years ago as part of the Local Food Local Chefs program. They're all about bringing Kingston’s best chefs together with local producers to share their knowledge and passion for local food with the public. Each Saturday features a different chef from one of Kingston’s best restaurants. The chef will share info about what’s in season, how to pick the best products and demonstrate a simple local food recipe that folks can make at home.  Each demo will also feature the farmers who produced the food sharing some of their growing secrets and talking about their farm.

For example, last summer Chef Ian Arthur from Chez Piggy joined us and showed how to prepare a delicious Green Bean Salad with Chèvre and Local Bacon.  Sound like something you might want to make at home?  Here's the recipe!

Green Bean Salad with Chèvre and Local Bacon

Serves: 4

2 cups green beans cut into one inch lengths.

1/2 cup of cherry tomatoes

1/4 cup shallot, diced

1/4 cup chèvre cheese

1/4 cup bacon bits

1/2 cup olive oil

3 tbsp. red wine vinegar

1 clove garlic, chopped

1 tsp. dijon mustard

1/2 tsp. sea salt

twist pepper

In a small bowl whisk together ingredients for the dressing.  Combine the salad ingredients in a salad bowl and dress. Toss to combine and serve.

These days there is a real interest in eating locally, and for good reason, but it can sometimes be a daunting task to learn how to source, cook and store the season’s bounty.  These demos are focused on inspiring people to use more local food at home and giving them the skills to do so. The public can watch the demo and then turn around and buy all the ingredients to make the recipe at home from the market vendors on the square.

Hope you can join us!
