People of the Big Dig: Wilma from Hip Kids

There is no shortage of cute at Hip Kids!  We dare you to walk in to the store and not fall in love! Whether you’re in the market for a bib, a stroller or some super cute shoes Hip Kids has it all!

Meet Wilma, today’s People of the Big Dig feature.  Find out what brought her to Kingston and what she enjoys doing when she’s not making the kids of Kingston a little hipper!

Favourite thing about downtown Kingston?

Our favourite thing about downtown Kingston is how vibrant and busy it is.  There are too many things to list: the water front, great retail shops and amazing restaurants. There truly is something for everyone! Even during the Big Dig the foot traffic downtown has not slowed down. Corcoran has been so good at helping our customers get to Hip Kids!

What’s your favourite product that you offer?

My favourite product in the store are our strollers. Baby's first wheels, for new parents, becomes as important as choosing a new car. We love helping them choose a product of the highest quality that will meet their needs - one seat or two, every day stroller or jogging stroller the list goes on.

What is your background:  work life- home life

I grew up in London Ontario and moved to Toronto to go to school. After completing a degree in Social Work at Ryerson University - I worked for the York Region Children's Aid Society for two years. From there I moved into a job in the baby world. I was the sales representative in Ontario for a company selling baby products nationally. Somewhere in there I got married and we had a beautiful baby girl of our own - who became the perfect product tester. In 2014 we moved to Kingston for my husband's job. We loved downtown Kingston right away and realized there was an opportunity to provide Kingston with quality baby products. So - with zero retail experience Hip Kids was born! We have enjoyed great success so far due to an amazing downtown community.

In May 2015 we moved to place on the St Lawrence and for fun we enjoy boating and are eagerly waiting to get out the stand up paddle board!

Where did you go on your last vacation?

In February we took a trip - sans baby - to Varadero, Cuba. The first day was beautiful - 29 degrees and sunny. Day two was 18 degrees and windy - not so much bikini weather. The forecast was not looking too promising - cold and windy. We decided to find the sun. We checked out of our resort, rented a car and drove south. Four hours later we found the sun in beautiful Trinidad. We rented a Casa (bed and breakfast) with a rooftop patio overlooking the old colonial city - and found an awesome beach. We spent the rest of the week exploring and eating great lobster dinners!

If you were treating your parents to dinner where would you take them?

When our parents come to Kingston we like to take them to Pan Chancho for Brunch and Tango Nuevo for Dinner. Downtown Kingston has so many great restaurants we have really enjoyed getting to know them one by one!
